silks, sling, lyra, & trapeze
Students train on a wide variety of aerial apparatuses including silks, sling, lyra, and trapeze. They are guided through a group warm up focusing on specific body parts used during aerial so as to prevent injuries. Then students do conditioning on the apparatus to gradually build their muscle strength over time. Much of the class is focused on learning skills and techniques such as how to wrap, climb, descend, hang, and create a multitude of shapes in the air. Students of all levels then work on choreography using the skills that have been taught to practice an aerial dance. Those who choose to participate are also given opportunities to perform at various points during the year working on stage presence, clean movements in the air, and physical expression.
Ojai Aerial is directed by Serra Benson. Serra has been training and performing as an aerialist since 2009 and has been an aerial instructor since 2018. She has a multiple subject teaching credential and has been a classroom teacher since 2002 in grades ranging from kindergarten to high school. Her background in child centered non-competitive education greatly influences the way she teaches aerial and is evident in the way she fosters a developmentally appropriate, inclusive, and nonjudgmental class environment. She currently teaches 3rd grade at Oak Grove School in Ojai, California.
